God is with us

This is the fourth in a series of December articles written by Beulah Baptist Church Pastor Tommy Pophin.

Signs are an important part of our everyday lives. Perhaps among the most important, for those of us who drive, are the signs lining the side of the road that give us driving instructions. As we travel along we see signs that indicate our speed, give directions, warn us of road hazards, when we are to yield and when we must stop.

Sometimes, we may chose to ignore such signs and we face the consequences of our actions. The one that most quickly comes to mind is that of explaining to a police officer why we failed to stay within the speed limit. “But officer” are the first words out of our mouth. And the next action is we get that dreaded ticket.

Other signs along the way include street signs. Street signs help us to find our way when we travel to places we have never been before. If you’ve ever been lost, you know the feeling of relief you find when you look up and see the name of the street for which you were looking.

The prophet Isaiah spoke of a sign concerning the Savior, he wrote “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14) What kind of sign did He give us? First: It was a sign of God’s power. Isaiah told us that Jesus would be born of a virgin.

Matthew 1:18 tells us, “This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.”

Second, It was a sign of God’s Trustworthiness. There are over 300 prophecies concerning Christ in the Old Testament which were fulfilled exactly during His lifetime. Third, it was a sign of God’s Love. Perhaps the most important reason why Jesus came to the earth was to fulfill the name given him in Isaiah 7:14, Immanuel. Immanuel means, “God with us.”

As you celebrate this Christmas, remember the most important thing, “God is with us.”
