Legion invites public to ‘Party at the Post’

Weatherford American Legion Post 163 members are hosting a number of fundraisers as part of their spaghetti dinner “Party at the Post” Friday, Jan. 17.

Legion spokesperson Johnathan Poe said the event will begin at 6 p.m. with the dinner, which benefits the Sons of the American Legion organization. Tickets are $6 and will be sold at the door, Poe said. Plates consist of spaghetti, garlic toast and salad with desserts available.

Being sold throughout the evening will be raffle tickets for the chance to take one of 20 helicopter rides around the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Just 100 tickets for the raffle will be sold and the winning ticket will be drawn at about 9 p.m., Poe said.

Proceeds from that fundraiser will go toward a newly formed group at the post called the Legion Riders, Poe said, consisting of 13 motorcycle riders who take part in motorcycle runs around the state to raise monies.

A highlight of the evening will be the toy motorcycle races commencing at 7 p.m., Poe said. The idea for the fundraiser came from the Mineral Wells Legion Post, where it was pretty successful.

The cycles themselves are only about 12 inches high and will not be ridden. The cycles will be moved along based on the rolls of two dice.

“Let’s say a one and a six are rolled, that means cycles one and six will be moved one space,” Poe said. “If two sixes are rolled, bike six moves two spaces and so on.”

People can bid on which bike they think will win each heat, Poe said.

“Let’s say someone bids $30 that bike 1 will win,” Poe said. “If it does win, the winner gets 80 percent of the pot with the rest of the money going toward Crossroads Ministries, which benefits teens in the community.”

The legion hall is located at 200 Cartwright Park Road off Peaster Highway in Weatherford.
