Local Guild sends quilts to West nursing home residents

The Quilter’s Guild of Parker County has a long history of providing quilts to local organizations and individuals through it’s Comfort Quilt Program.

So when member Eula Phillips requested quilts for nursing home residents in West, Texas, the board voted to send the quilts and Comfort co-chairs Joyce Coney and Joanna Swonger sprang into action.

Through her church, Phillips became aware of Rev. Rusty Kwast, who worked with the West nursing home. The facility was home to 133 people who have since had to be transferred to facilities in Waco and Hillsboro.

The members of the Guild work during the year and at the annual “Comfort Quilt Sew-In” to assure there are quilts waiting to be distributed when and where there is a need. Quilts from Comfort Quilt inventory as well as from individual members, for this specific purpose, were collected. A total of 35 quilts were sent with Phillips’ daughter to Rev. Kwast, who arranged for the ladies of the congregation to personally deliver them to the displaced residents.

The Quilter’s Guild of Parker County is a non-profit organization established in 2000 for the purpose of preserving and promoting the art of quilting and quilt making. As a community service, the Guild provides 120-200 quilts to local children’s organizations, battered women’s shelters, police and fire departments, nursing homes and Habitat for Humanity families. With board approval (necessary for out-of-area donations) the Guild has also supplied quilts to victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

QGPC meets monthly at the Grace First Presbyterian Church, 606 Mockingbird Lane, at 7 p.m.  All interested persons are invited to attend. For additional information about the Guild go to www.quiltersguildofparkercounty.org or contact President Kathleen Poznick at 817-690-9024.
