Parker County Historical Commission gets new digs

The Parker County Historical Commission has established an office at 216 Fort Worth Highway across from the public market. This is a first for the historical commission.

When the State Historical Commission was formed by the Texas Legislature over 40 years ago, there was a provision that every county in the state of Texas would have a county historical commission to serve as a connection between the people of the state and the State Historical Commission, to help people in the county with applications for state historical markers, encourage recognition of pioneer cemeteries and be a watchful eye on historic sites. This latter item was for such concerns as pipeline and road construction that might threaten historic sites, historic bridges and archeological sites.

Currently, most of the cemeteries in Parker County lack “historic cemetery” designation. This designation protects cemeteries from developers, pipelines and roads. With an application and a filing fee of $25, any interested person or group can file for this designation through the county historical commission.

Anyone in the county can propose topics for historical markers or seek historic designation for cemetery.

The office is located in a space provided by The Museum of the Americas and is open during regular museum hours, 10 a.m. to 5p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Email the Parker County Historical Commission at PCHistCom@sbcglobal.net, or call 817-341-8668.
