Chick Days: Raising happy, healthy chicks

For those thinking of raising chickens, those who have chickens and want to get the best eggs for the family or anyone who wants to learn more about chickens and tips on keeping them healthy, Walden Farm and Ranch Supply is hosting seminars on Saturday, March 15, at its Weatherford location, 2551 S. Main St., and Saturday, March 29, at the Millsap location, 201 Fairview Road, for Chick Days. Learn all about what’s best for your chickens and how that can result in delicious eggs.

Both seminars’ start at 10 a.m. and the topic will be “Raising Happy and Healthy Chicks.”

Each family attending will receive two free baby chicks and a wealth of information for raising them.

“Farm families have known the joys of raising their own poultry for years, but people everywhere are beginning to realize the many benefits of raising poultry, even if it’s right in their backyards,” said Larry Walden of Walden Farm and Ranch Supply. “We are excited to help families get started with their own flocks, so they too can participate in the chicken raising trend.”

Throughout the duration of Chick Days, Walden Farm and Ranch Supply will have experts available to offer advice and guidance on how to raise chickens from freshly hatched chicks through laying, including details on proper nutrition to provide the best eggs. Chicken raising experts can learn new tips and beginners will learn the basics of starting their flocks.

“Last year’s Chick Days activities were such a success. We’re excited to help more people learn to raise their own poultry,” said Walden.

Hatchlings will be available throughout the duration of Chick Days. However, it is recommended to visit the Walden website at waldenfarmandranch.com and see what baby chicks are arriving weekly.

“Besides knowing your eggs are fresh, raising chickens is a fun activity for the whole family,” said Larry Walden. “For adults there’s a sense of pride and self-sufficiency in raising your own food, and kids have fun while learning responsibility and contributing to the household by caring for the flock.”

In June, there were seven students who explored the flora and fauna of the rainforest through music at The Burch School of Music. Each child made his or her own rain stick, along with other crafts and art work. For two hours each day for five days, students explored a different level of the rainforest, starting with the emergent layer at the top, moving through the canopy, the understory, the forest floor and the rivers. They let bats fly (black balloons) and were eaten by a boa constrictor. On the last day they dressed as natives and drummed together.
