The mystery of the Mineral Wells cannon

WEATHERFORD — For years it has been looked at, wondered about and climbed on by many kids at West City Park in Mineral Wells.

The cannon that has been a fixture at the park has now been moved to its new home adjacent to the Medal of Honor memorial under construction at the intersection of Washington Street and Lee Road at Wolters Industrial Park, the former Fort Wolters in Parker County.

The cannon is a mystery. The Fort Wolters Gate Committee wants to hear from anyone with information about it. City Manager Lance Howerton offered the cannon to the committee for the Fort Wolters Historical Park. According to committee co-chair Mary Creighton they are also “getting a model helicopter that was in the park during the 1970s and most likely donated by some helicopter pilots.”

Creighton said at their recent meeting, they realized nobody knew the history of the cannon and would like public feedback from anyone who might help fill in the puzzle. To offer information on the cannon, contact Mary Creighton at 940-325-8224.
