Parker County Retired Teachers hear good Texas news

State Rep. Phil King brought something special to the Nov. 5 meeting of the Parker County Retired Teachers – good news about the economy in Texas.

One hundred-ten members were encouraged with his positive reports about SB 1458, which allows Texas teachers to receive their first raise in many years. King, R-Weatherford, talked about about Proposition 6, passed on that day’s statewide election, which will help guarantee a strong water supply for Texas for the next 50 years. King spoke about his pride in the fact that Texas has a balanced budget and about the number of businesses interested in becoming a part of the Texas scene. For the past nine years, Chief Executive Magazine has named Texas the best state in which to do business.

King also spoke about Texas’ becoming energy independent within the next decade and about a future proposition which will fund transportation needs. Ashley Westenhover, who is the granddaughter of retired Weatherford College professor Glen Westenhover and serves as Chief of Staff for King in Austin, was a guest at the meeting.

Tom Pritchard, a tireless worker for retired teachers, exhorted members to give generously to the Texas Retired Teachers Foundation. More than $1,000 was donated at the meeting, funds which will provide scholarships for future teachers, grants for innovative practices in the classroom, and aid for retired teachers who need financial assistance.

Generosity characterizes members of PCRTA. Once again they gave more than $100 to the book project, which will provide Weatherford Community Education with books for kindergarten children and first graders at the end of the 2014 school year.

Members responded enthusiastically to the magazine drive for our local health-care centers by donating more than 400 magazines. The Sunshine Committee will be delivering this variety of reading materials to residents in November.

President Louretta Evans reminded members of the responsibility we all have to serve when she said, “It’s not what we say about our blessings, but it is how we use them.” In anticipation of Veterans Day, she asked those who had served this country, preserving the blessing of freedom, along with the widows of servicemen, to stand. A special treat for veterans was to be first in line for lunch.
