Man charged with severely beating border collie

By CHRISTIN COYNE

A Parker County man was arrested Thursday after he was accused of beating a border collie with a metal bucket, breaking several of the animal’s front teeth.

David Regan McCrum, 48, was arrested on a Class A misdemeanor charge of cruelty to non-livestock animals and released from the Parker County Jail Friday on $2,500 bond.

The incident occurred in the 200 block of Dana Court on Jan. 18.

McCrum’s neighbor reportedly told a Parker County sheriff’s deputy that she heard dogs yelping and whining and, when she looked out the window, saw McCrum holding an object and swinging his arm. McCrum had the dog backed into a corner, according to the woman’s statement.

She reportedly told a deputy that when she walked outside, McCrum told her that a dog called Angel attempted to bite him and he lost his cool, beating the animal “pretty badly.”

The dog’s owner, a relative of McCrum, reportedly told a Parker County sheriff’s investigator that McCrum had walked up and was standing at the front gate when the border collie ran up barking at McCrum.

McCrum became angry, picked up a metal bucket, chased the dog across the yard, striking it numerous times, the man reportedly told the sheriff’s office.

The dog reportedly had to have four or five teeth removed by a veterinarian because they were broken.
