PASTOR POPHIN: You never know what a day may bring

By PASTOR TOMMY POPHIN

You’ve heard the saying, “You never know what a day may bring.”

I’m writing this article on another snowy day in Texas. There were rumors of a few flakes. My wife woke up at our typical time to get up and get the kids off to school. She reported a “pretty good snowfall.” A phone call came from the school about a two-hour delay, and then all heaven broke loose and we have a beautiful day of snow and no school.

“You never know what a day may bring.”

On Tuesday of this past week, I went to a local jail to visit with a young man whose name we will call Jay. As Jay came to the visitation window, he was suspicious. He had no idea who I was. I told him I was the pastor of Beulah Baptist Church where his aunt attended.

He was defensive in the beginning. As we began to talk, he struggled with the conversation. He was part of a 12-step program and was working on the step concerning a higher power. Something began to happen at that moment. The Holy Spirit took over the conversation. Jay was trying to decide which “higher power” he would turn to for help. Prompted by God, I boldly said, “You know, there is only one higher power that can truly help you.”

Jay dropped his head, then looked back up and said, “Yes, I know.” I asked, “Have you placed your faith in Jesus for salvation?” He said he had. Prompted again, “I asked, have you truly trusted Him with your life?” Tears came to his eyes, he said, “No, I haven’t.”

So I did what supernaturally came next and asked, “Jay, will you place your life in Jesus, right now?” He said, “Yes, I will.” We prayed and, right before our eyes, we saw a life transformed into a man who is now a “Child of King Jesus.” Hallelujah, what a Savior! We both sat there and the tears flowed.
