WCS student reads in nation’s capitol marking 224th inaugural anniversary of President George Washington

Madison Avery Flynn, daughter of Sean and Ashley Flynn, of Weatherford, and a first grader at Weatherford Christian School, participated in a historic event in the nation’s capitol on May 8th honoring President George Washington.

Madison narrated portions of eight handwritten prayers found in George Washington’s prayer journal. She is among the youngest of Americans to have spoken before a group of Congress in Statuary Hall.

U.S. Congresswoman Kay Granger, Texas District 12, was an invited honored guest to the event along with all members of the House and Senate.

The event, “Washington A Man of Prayer 2013” was an observance of the 224th inaugural anniversary of President George Washington. It was a non-partisan event exclusively for Members of Congress and Senate, and served as an opportunity for members to honor America’s greatest statesman. Prayers were offered for wisdom in governance as public servants to God and the people, and on behalf of the nation, our president and his cabinet, the Supreme Court and its justices, and members of the House and Senate.

Statuary Hall is the original chamber of the House of Representatives and now houses statues of many famous Americans. It is usually reserved for state affairs. From 1800-1879, the hall was used every Sunday for interdenominational Christian church services. Legislation allowing Christian worship in the chamber was signed into law by President Thomas Jefferson, who attended services there regularly for eight years as did President James Madison after him.

This was only the second time in more than 100 years that a private Christian organization has been granted this privilege – both times to “Come Pray With Me,” founder, pastor Dan Cummins of Bridlewood Church in Bullard.

The keynote address was given by Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. Also speaking was Congresswoman Michele Bachmann.

The event was recorded by the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) and can be found at www.ComePrayWithMe.org.
