WEATHERFORD — Come December, the Weatherford Roo football team will have one less name on its coaching roster.

Earlier this week, the Weatherford ISD human resources department received an emailed notification, from head football coach Reid Waller, that he would be stepping down from his coaching position, Derik Moore, WISD director of communication, said.

According to Moore, Waller informed his athletes of the decision Tuesday night.

In a press release sent out by the district, Waller said that he will be stepping down from his position “effective Dec. 21 to pursue other options.”

Waller did not return a phone call seeking comment.

Board members approved the hiring of Waller in 2010, after the departure of head coach Kenny Wheaton.

Former superintendent Deborah Cron said Waller’s passion for children was one of the reasons he was recommended.

“The last two years, he has been at the honors banquet, he was selected by one of our senior honor students as the most influential teacher in their lives,” she said at the time of Waller’s hiring.

Before 2010, Waller had served as the defensive coordinator for the past three seasons.

“On behalf of Weatherford ISD, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Coach Waller for his leadership commitment and dedication to both our students and our school system,” WISD superintendent Jeffrey Hanks said. “He is a people person — and he was a great match for our athletes and our other coaches.”

During his stint as head coach of the Roos, Waller compiled an overall record of 7-23, with a district mark of 5-16.

With 29 years of coaching experience on his resume, Waller also coached at Plano and Henderson before making the move to Weatherford.

Waller’s wife, Sarah, teaches kindergarten at Curtis Elementary.

Hanks said that the district hoped to have Waller’s position filled by March 1, adding that he anticipated a “significant number of qualified applicants” for the position.
