Burch music students place at state

WEATHERFORD —

On May 17, 2014, more than 1,800 pre-college-aged musicians performed at Texas State University in San Marcos at the Texas Federation of Music Clubs’ annual state competition. There were 28 pianists from The Burch School of Music among musicians from all over the state. Each student had to qualify for state by earning a superior rating at the local festival in February.  The results for the BSM students went well, with two all-state winners, 24 outstanding awards, and two superior ratings.

One all-state winner was Hannah Baker, an eighth grader at Trinity Christian Academy. She is the daughter of Matt and Chandra Baker, and she studies piano with Russell Hughes. The other all-state winner was Tyler Anne Leatherman, a fourth grader at Weatherford Christian School. She is the daughter of Holly and Cole Leatherman of Millsap, and she studies piano with Holly Hughes. Each of these girls received a plaque and performed at a winners’ recital.

The 24 pianists who earned an outstanding rating and a rosette ribbon were: Major Adkins, Sophie Bailey, Hannah E. Baker, Brendan Ballard, Madolyn Ballard, Sydney Carter, Caleb Edmunds, Zoe Fernandez, Charlotte Floyd, Grace Hough, Kirsten Jones, Katie McCullough, Connor McKinney, Matthew Mize, Jasmin Patterson, Emma Perales, Max Perales, Michaela Perales, Reagan Pirkle, Olivia Portillo, Parker Robertson, Meghan Smith, Miranda Smith and Sarah Bea Willoughby.

There were two pianists who earned a superior rating and a blue ribbon, and those students were July Patterson and Hailey Pirkle. All of these students study piano with either Russell or Holly Hughes at The Burch School of Music.
