ASK A MASTER GARDENER: Not only are pyracantha berries not poisonous, they make a great jelly

Are pyracantha berries poisonous?

No; actually the reverse. Pyracantha berries are edible and make a great jelly, tasting like apple jelly. Pick them when they are a ripe red or orange, depending on the variety you have.

How can I kill nut grass?

Nut grass is a sedge, and very difficult to remove. It is too late to do anything right now, but come next spring, there are several products on the market, such as Image and Sledgehammer, that are quite effective. Repeat applications are required when this weed is actively growing.

When and how should I cut my ornamental grasses?

Ornamental grasses are at their peak right now (October to early November) with beautiful plumes coming into bloom. After our first freeze they will turn brown. You then have two options, leave them as they are through the winter to enjoy their dramatic appearance all winter long, or prune them back so you do not see the brown grass. Most master gardeners prefer the former, both for winter interest and for a home for butterflies over the winter. Then cut them back in February-March when you see new green leaves appear.
