Former, current WCS students set rank for 2013 youth cutting

By LESLIE CHALMERS/Special to the Democrat

Being involved in the cutting horse industry and attending classes at Weatherford Christian School has gone hand-in-hand for many of the school’s students in the past but two ladies in general both former and current have set the rank for those to follow in the future.

Former WCS student, Shannon McCoy, could not have finished the summer on a higher note within the cutting horse world. The 19-year-old daughter of Margaret and Jeff McCoy has been showing horses for 10 years and clinched the 2013 Senior Youth Champion on her horse, Pepcorn, at this year’s NCHA Summer Spectacular in Fort Worth at the Will Rogers Coliseum.

She is currently ranked first out of 15 in the Senior Youth division with 193 points from 63 shows. Shannon has also been named the 2013 recipient of the Joseph Broderick Beaver Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship awards Shannon $10,000 towards the continuation of her education at the college or university of her choice, which in this case is Texas Christian University, where she enrolled this fall.

Shannon’s travel partner, Sheridan Clark, an eighth grader at Weatherford Christian School, is also making her mark this year on the cutting horse world and hopes to follow in her friend’s footsteps. Sheridan, daughter of Jason and Becky Clark, is currently sitting fourth out of the top 15 in the 2013 Junior Youth division with 79 points in 23 shows. She was the Reserve Champion on Special Nu Kitty at this year’s Scholarship Cutting as well as finishing fourth with a 227 on consecutive nights at the Top 15 World Finals on Wood Ya Wanna.

Weatherford Christian School is proud of both these young ladies and their incredible accolades within the cutting horse industry. They have made the mark and set the rank for others to follow because of hard work and dedication and we look forward to seeing what they will accomplish next.

In June, there were seven students who explored the flora and fauna of the rainforest through music at The Burch School of Music. Each child made his or her own rain stick, along with other crafts and art work. For two hours each day for five days, students explored a different level of the rainforest, starting with the emergent layer at the top, moving through the canopy, the understory, the forest floor and the rivers. They let bats fly (black balloons) and were eaten by a boa constrictor. On the last day they dressed as natives and drummed together.
