Vigil for the victims

Millsap community honors Sandy Hook children and adults

By LIBBY CLUETT | lcluett@mineralwellsindex.com

MILLSAP – The night was bone-chilling for recent Texas weather and the occasion for Thursday night’s Millsap Community candlelight vigil was solemn, as close to 70 citizens of all ages, from Millsap and the area, gathered to share their compassion, love, prayers and sorrow for 26 children and adults gunned down Dec. 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Millsap Volunteer Fire Department Chaplain Kevin Moore led the circle of children and adults in a prayer for the lives lost in the Newtown, Conn., school.

As candles burned, individuals – parents, school staff, teens, kindergarteners and more – said farewell individually to the 20 first graders and six school staff whose lives were taken when a lone shooter attacked their school. Vigil goers released, one at a time, a balloon for each of the Sandy Hook students and staff.

Organized by Millsap ISD parents Michele Brian and Erika Gonzalez, the Millsap event was intended to give local citizens a chance to share their concern for the lives lost in this national tragedy.

“It was more than what we expected and I hoped it helped everybody,” said Brian. “It was something we felt we needed to do for the students and the community.”
