Student fight leads to knife injury in Springtown

SPRINGTOWN — Two Springtown ISD students were involved in an altercation involving a knife during an afternoon bus route Tuesday.

Springtown Police Lt. Curtis Stone said two juveniles, a 16-year-old high school student and a 12-year-old intermediate student, got into an altercation on the bus when the 12-year-old began making fun of the older student.

“The actor told him to stop making fun of him and when the younger boy didn’t, he pulled a knife out and held it to his throat,” Stone said. “When he took the knife away, it nicked the boy’s neck and did require a couple of stitches.

“It was sharp enough that it was able to cut the left side of his throat.”

Springtown ISD superintendent Mike Kelley said that the bus driver was unaware of the incident until the two students came forward.

“The [victim] notified the driver and didn’t indicate that he was injured badly,” Kelley said. “The driver contacted our transportation director, Shane Strickland, who contacted parents and guardians of the individuals directly involved as well as students who may have witnessed the incident.

“Local law enforcement agents were also notified, and meetings to address the situation began [Wednesday] morning.”

Kelley said that in situations outside of school hours, the district’s school resource officer is contacted and made aware of any incidents.

Stone said a report was made with Springtown Police around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday after the victim and his parents arrived at the station.

“Our driver and our staff followed the procedures and policies we have in place and we will continue to follow our student code of conduct to address this appropriately,” Kelley said.
