MILLSAP MATTERS: Tribute to George Strait on April 11

Weatherford Democrat

MILLSAP – As we move into a new month some of the students at our elementary school are hard at work putting the final touches on a musical that they will present to the public on April 11.

Under the direction of music teacher, Missy Dunn, the theme of the program will be a “Tribute to George Strait.”

With the idea being the brain child of Physical Education teacher, Michael Humphrey, the kids love the direction that the production has taken and grades K-2nd will be participating. Ms. Dunn has done an excellent job of developing the students’ talents, and has included Strait’s songs “Heartland,” “Yes or No,” and “Amarillo by Morning” in the show. A highlight is sure to be the kids dancing to “Ace in the Hole.”

All of this will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Millsap Elementary Cafetorium. This will be a great night of local entertainment, free to the public so please plan to attend and support all of the hard work that the children have put into their show.

In other local talent news, our own Juan Etta Gilbert is a contestant in the 12th Annual Ms. Senior Parker County Pageant. This requires much preparation and work as there will be evening wear, talent, and interview involved. Word has it that Juan Etta’s daughter, Miss Texas 1982 Gloria Gilbert Barron, is coaching her mother for the upcoming event. Mrs. Gilbert is sponsored by the Millsap Neighborhood Ladies Home and Garden Club of which she is a faithful member.

There will be recognition of the contestant who sells the most pre-pageant tickets ($10 each).Tickets are also being sold on a hand crocheted bedspread. Tickets for the pageant and bedspread can both be purchased the evening of the contest, which is Saturday, April 13, 7 p.m., at the Alkek Center at Weatherford College.

To buy tickets to help our local contestant call 940-682-4402. Proceeds from the pageant will go to Meals on Wheels and those from the bedspread will go into the Senior Center Building Fund. Millsap is proud of our representative, Mrs. Gilbert!

Millsap VFD is interested in forming a support services group. The purpose of the group would be to assist the department and community in times of need. The department is looking for community minded people to help with the endeavor. For those who would like to help with the fire department but not be a firefighter or medical responder this would be a good way to participate.

For more info call 940-682-4390 or email Also, the regular monthly department meeting is the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Fire Station. The department is always looking for more ways to serve the community and this is another great idea that they have come up with, so please help if you can.

There is a new program on the horizon which will be of help to those in the area who are recovering addicts. The Unchained Gang, led by Freddy and Cindy Clark, meets at Millsap First Baptist Church every Sunday evening at 5 p.m.

The official program kickoff will be in June, and is based on the nationally successful Celebrate Recovery series. The leaders are devoted to this ministry and it is something that has been needed here , as in most other places, for a good while. We applaud them for stepping forward and reaching out to those in need of this help and wish everyone involved much success.

Our school district is already making preparations for 2013-14 students with pre-registration for Pre-K and kindergarten students.
