MILLSAP – Millsap is a great town, and one of the reasons that it is a wonderful place is because there are people here who are always willing to reach out and help those in need.
The new organization on the Millsap horizon with this goal as its main purpose is the Community Support Group.
As we have been following the grassroots beginning of this group, they recently had their first planning meeting and are really jumping in with some good ideas for helping our community’s clubs and organizations.
On this front the Community Support Group will be working with different local organizations and school clubs to get ready for the annual Millsap VFD Turkey Dinner. The fire department is changing the way they will do the November dinner, as they are turning it from a fire department event into a community event. This will allow different groups to participate and receive some of the proceeds.
We are looking forward to following this new development in the dinner, and to keeping up with all of the great endeavors that the Community Support Group is going to be involved in.
With fall here, we need to remember that unfortunately flu season will follow. The good news is that Millsap ISD is sponsoring a Community Flu Vaccination Clinic on Oct. 1. It will be in the Elementary Cafetorium, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. The immunization is free to kids 18 years and under, but if a parent or guardian will not be present for the shot the child must have a signed Parker County Hospital District consent form. For those with Medicare the immunization is free, but the Medicare card must be presented. To other folks the cost is $15, but many insurances will cover the cost. For any questions call 817-599-1229. We are very thankful to have this service offered close to home.
Received a special request from Mineral Wells resident Missy Light. Her father, Calvin Light, who is a lifelong resident of Millsap, is seriously ill with Crohn’s Disease and facing a surgery on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Mr. Light has been in a very weakened state for quite some time, so there is grave concern over the needed operation. Missy is asking for prayers for her dad as he goes through this procedure. She is a very sweet young lady who loves her father greatly, so please help with this request.
There are many happenings in the town of Cool. The city council recently hired a new secretary, Mary Jane Rasberry. Enthusiastic crowds are attending gospel singing at Holders Chapel the first Saturday of each month. Everyone is invited to come out at 6 p.m. and enjoy some great talent. The Rothrock Produce Stand, located about a mile east of the Cool blinking lights on the north side of U.S. Highway 180, will have its yearly sweet potatoes for sale about Oct. 1. This is an active community and we enjoy being neighbors with them.
With Walden’s Farm and Ranch Equipment Consignment Sale just around the corner on Oct. 5 many locals are preparing for this event which brings in a great crowd from far and wide. The actual event will kick off at Walden’s Millsap grounds, 201 Fairview Road, at 10 a.m. The Abandoned Cemetery Association will be onsite selling lunch items, and for dessert the Millsap Neighborhood Ladies Home and Garden Club will have a bake sale set up at the store. Since there will be many visitors there are going to be many yard sales around town. This will be a great day for getting out and enjoying the fall air while doing some shopping. Come on out and join us!
In closing, the news in last week’s column on the State Fair’s unveiling of the revamped Big Tex drew some reader response. With new information, Big Tex now has his own song, “The Comeback Cowboy,” recorded by the Fingerless Ghost Band.
According to the fair’s public relations department a new voice has been chosen for the fair mascot and the identity of the voice will be revealed on opening day, Sept. 27. Lastly, the giant is now 55 feet tall instead of his former 52 feet. A great start, with lots of fun, for the fair and fair goers!
