MILLSAP MATTERS: Millsap welcomes peach riders

By SHARRON HUDSON

MILLSAP – As we move into July many in the area are looking forward to the 29th Annual Parker County Peach Festival, which is coming up on July 13. The event will be held as usual in historic downtown Weatherford from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

While there has already been much written and publicized about the festival, those around Millsap have a special interest in the Peach Pedal Bike Ride, which is held in conjunction with the festival. Our town is included on the route, of which there is a total of 70 miles to conquer.

This event, which is in its 25th year, is for two great causes: scholarships and other assistance through the Weatherford College Foundation and the promotion of Weatherford through the local Chamber of Commerce.

More than two thousand participants are expected from across Texas and beyond. Along the course there are quite a few rest stops. We are excited about this because one of the stops is a few miles from Millsap at Newberry with another in Millsap. This is always a great day with all of the bikers practically gliding through, and many of our folks are looking forward to seeing the riders and cheering them on.

On a serious note, in an annual survey by the Annie E. Casey Foundation 23 percent of our country’s children are living at the poverty level. While there have been gains in education and health nationally, there have been serious setbacks to the economic well being of children since 2005. Poverty rates continue to rise in the middle class, according to the National Center for Children in Poverty. One thing this means to us in Millsap is that there are children in our community who need to be fed, since they are not receiving the breakfasts and lunches provided by the school during the school year.
