MILLSAP – As we head into August it’s getting time to prepare for the kids to head back to school. On that note, new Elementary Principal Cathy Bradshaw has information she wants to share on registration for the younger students.

Millsap’ s new elementary students will register on Aug. 7, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Returning students will register Aug. 8, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. For returning students this is a time to update information, fill out forms for the new school year, pay the school supply fee, and find out which class the child will be in.

This campus’ Meet the Teacher Night is Aug. 22, 6-7:30 p.m. You will find school personnel ready and happy to assist you at the elementary school building on all of these dates.

With the beginning of school comes the students’ football season. A much-anticipated event in Millsap is the annual high school “Midnight Madness.” Everyone is invited on Aug. 5 at 12:01 a.m. to come out to the high school football field and watch the Bulldogs team begin summer preparations for the 2013 season.

Then, on Aug. 9 at the high school football field the Millsap Booster Club is sponsoring “Meet the Bulldogs” night. Beginning at 7 p.m. all coaches and players will be introduced, and refreshments will be served by the Booster Club. The community is invited to these activities to support the coaches and players.

Newberry Church had a nice addition to a recent service with a branch of the Newberry family traveling in from Oklahoma and the Panhandle to visit. They are cousins to local Pat Newberry and had such a good time they are planning on coming back for the church family’s homecoming celebration.

The homecoming is planned for the fourth Sunday in September. Many attend this event, so it’s time to mark the calendars for a day of good Bible teaching, food and visiting!

It is with sadness that we report the recent passing of Newberry area resident Melissa Lee. Mrs. Lee was a wonderful mother, an advocate for breast cancer awareness and very involved with kids’ sports. She leaves behind husband Chris, daughter Cheyenne and son, Brenden. Condolences to this family.

Preparations for the opening of Triumph House, a residential facility for girls rescued from human trafficking, is making headlines in area newspapers. As a reminder, there will be a housewarming for this residence at the Millsap Community Center on Aug. 10, 10 a.m.-noon. With many local sponsors on board, Millsap First Baptist Church is handling the details for this event.

Triumph House is registered at Target and Bed Bath and Beyond, or you are very welcome to come by the Community Center to make a donation. A very worthy cause, so please help if you can.

Another reminder is the second annual Back to School Fair for Millsap students will be at City Hall on Aug. 10, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. This is for students of all ages to receive supplies, vouchers for haircuts and other helps. If you have donations to drop off, City Manager Mark Barnes invites you to bring them by City Hall weekdays, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. (closed for lunch noon-1 p.m.).
