MILLSAP MATTERS: John Millsaps to speak at Heritage Society meeting

By SHARRON HUDSON

MILLSAP – As we head into September there is big news from the Millsap Heritage Society. They have slated one of the Millsaps descendants to be the featured speaker at its next meeting.

On Sept. 9, John Millsaps, who is a historian for the Millsaps family, will bring their stories and lore to the audience. Mr. Millsaps, a resident of Keller, is also familiar with the details and layout of the family cemetery, which is located at the original site of the cabins. He has already graciously presented the town with a copy of the Millsaps family history book.

Perhaps one part of Mr. Millsaps’ presentation will center around how the last letter of the family name was dropped from our town’s name. This will be a very special event and everyone is welcome. The meeting will be at Heritage Park (log cabin grounds) at 7 p.m.

Newberry Cumberland Presbyterian Church will be celebrating its homecoming on Sept. 22 with a great day of worship, fellowship, and food. The event will officially start at 11 a.m. and everyone is invited to “Come See What’s Cooking.” It’s going to be a tasty lunch with the meat being furnished and everybody that comes is to bring a side dish or dessert. Also western/pioneer clothing is the dress for the day. Folks come from far off parts of Texas and Oklahoma for this yearly happening, so many from around here are looking forward to it.

Local friends of Elvin Brawner were saddened upon hearing of his recent passing. A resident of Santo, Mr. Brawner was associated with people from our area through Millsap Methodist Church. He was a Navy veteran and served in the Dallas Fire Department from 1951-77. He retired from the department with the rank of captain. Condolences to son John Brawner and daughter J. Carol Brawner, and other extended family members.
