MILLSAP MATTERS: WC drama students bring performance to Millsap students

(Continued)

There will be a raffle drawing at 7:30 p.m. for five prizes, all worth more than $50 each, and you need not be present to win. These tickets are $2 each, or 3 for $5. Political candidates are invited to come and meet the public as there will be a special area set up outside (weather permitting) for this purpose.

Tickets for the meal and raffle will be available at the door or to pre-purchase call 817-360-6681. This is always a wonderful evening so come help the women raise funds for their Millsap Senior Scholarship, Christmas shut-ins bags and other community needs.

It’s time to start getting ready so when the weather warms we can enjoy some outside hobbies. To help out Waldens Farm and Ranch Supply Stores are going to supply buyers with fish for their water holes and chicks to raise. Fish Day is Feb. 8 as follows: Weatherford store, 2551 S. Main St., 8-9 a.m.; Millsap store, 201 Fairview, 10-11 a.m.; and the Mineral Wells store, 196 Garrett Morris Parkway, noon-1 p.m. For questions call Stock My Pond at 501-676-3768. The first chicks will arrive on Feb. 13. Some fishing and getting out in the chicken yard will be great fun in just a couple of months, so better start getting ready now.

Feb. 2 is Groundhog Day, and as we know if the critter sees his shadow there is supposed to be six more weeks of winter weather. With the holiday having its origins in European weather lore, the celebration actually began in Pennsylvania in the 18th century. The largest celebration at present is in Punxsutawney, Pa., with up to 40,000 people in attendance.

However, the University of Dallas in Irving has Groundhog Day as an official holiday and this celebration is claimed to be the second largest such celebration in the world. While the ability of the groundhog as a weather predictor is acknowledged and celebrated, one almanac notes that on records kept since 1887, the Punxsutawney predictions have been correct just 39 percent of the time.

Shadow, or no shadow, enjoy the day!
