MILLSAP MATTERS: The Big Kahuna Fundraiser sure to be a tasty event

By SHARRON HUDSON

MILLSAP – As the school year is well under way, the Millsap Elementary PTO is off to an exciting start! The group already has a project ready to kick off on Sept. 16.

The Big Kahuna Fundraiser is a treat for all buyers as the major products are delicious foods. Of special interest to many are the wonderful cookies and an array of tasty goodies great for holiday and cold weather meals. As the group made a significant funding contribution toward getting the canopy shade over the playground, their plans are to make more improvements to the play area.

The executive board meets the first Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. A general meeting follows in the elementary gym, and to top off the evening a student program will be presented. If you are interested in buying any of the Big Kahuna treats drop by the elementary school office or call the school at 940-682-4994.

For those who are gearing up for deer season in November there is going to be a Texas Parks and Wildlife Hunters Education Course at the Millsap Community Center on Sept. 28 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The certified, volunteer instructor will be Alan Walters, who has taught this course to more than 400 people across the state over the last five years. Walters said anyone born after Sept. 2, 1971, who is going to hunt in Texas is required to have a hunters education course. This one-time class satisfies the requirement for all 50 states. It is for those 9 years old and up, with a $20 fee per person. For registration call Walters at 903-456-5264.

The recent meeting of the Millsap Heritage Society was a great time as John Millsaps, a descendent of Fuller Millsaps, for whom our town is named, was the guest speaker. The range of subjects included singer Ronny Millsap, who is a kinsman, one of the Millsaps’ participation in the Battle of the Alamo, and the general boundaries of the thousand acres of land owned by Fuller.
