Jeff Smith has been named publisher of the Weatherford Democrat, succeeding Julie Killion, who will become advertising director of the Tribune-Star in Terre Haute, Ind.
Both newspapers are owned by Community Newspaper Holdings Inc., of Montgomery, Ala.
In addition, Smith has been named a corporate vice president of sales and marketing. He will serve the company’s newspapers and websites in Texas. Killion continues in her role as a vice president of sales and marketing, working with the company’s newspapers and websites in Indiana.
Smith is a 26-year veteran of the newspaper and advertising industries. Most recently he was CNHI’s corporate advertising trainer, focusing on digital and automotive products. He managed online auto advertising products prior to that.
“I look forward to getting to know the community better, getting to know the civic leaders and the business community as well,” Smith said, “and really providing the things that people in Weatherford and Parker County need to run their daily lives. We are in the business of news and information, and we want to be able to continue to provide the people here with everything they need on a daily basis.”
No stranger to the area, Smith said he looks forward to the opportunities Weatherford and Parker County present.
“I have watched with pretty keen interest, as probably a lot of people have, the growth here in Parker County and specifically Aledo and Weatherford, and it continues to grow,” he said. “You look at all the things you have going on in the community, it points to nothing but good things.”
“We are fortunate to have someone of Jeff’s ability to take the reins in Weatherford,” said Steve McPhaul, executive vice president and chief operating officer of CNHI. “He is a true professional and has spent much of his life in this area. Jeff will do an outstanding job. His passion and commitment will be a true asset for the readers and advertisers of the Weatherford Democrat.”
