City event looks to hook kids

KidFish planned for April 13 at Holland Lake Pond

By BRIAN SMITH

Weatherford Parks and Rec officials will be hosting KidFish Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to noon at Holland Lake Pond.

Kim Thieme with Parks and Recreation said this is the third event the city has partnered to benefit the KidFish Foundation but the city has held similar events for about six to eight years.

Hundreds of big catfish will be stocked in the pond later this week for the event, which brought about 75-100 kids through age 16 at last year’s event. Thieme said the number of children can fluctuate depending on the weather, other sports in the area, etc.

The event is free and registration can be done the day of the event. For those that wish to register prior to and have a chance to win some cool prizes in the process, participants can pick up a registration form, which must be signed by a parent or guardian, at the Parks and Recreation office on Palo Pinto Street and get sponsorships where donations can be given to the KidFish Foundation and its programs supporting youth fishing.

Depending on the amount of money raised, children can have their choice of a T-shirt, trophy or a hat. The top 10 fundraisers who raise more than $50 along with the kids who catch the longest fish in their divided age group quality for the KidFish Classic and have the chance to win big prizes such as  a bass boat, trolling motor and more.

The child who catches the longest fish statewide automatically gets a $1,000 savings bond and $500 donated to their school for educational resources. Registering early also gives an idea of how many children to expect.

The city is receiving help in the event from Jerry Durant Auto Group of Weatherford, which Thieme said has gone to great lengths to make sure there are door prizes for everyone that takes part.
