Turkeys, other donations sought for Thanksgiving for veterans

By SALLY SEXTON

Once again, the Weatherford R.D. Nelson Memorial VFW Post 4746 is stepping up to help fellow veterans by providing a hot meal on Thanksgiving Day.

Members of the post will be serving Thanksgiving and Christmas meals to veterans at the Fort Worth VA Clinic. The Thanksgiving meal will be Nov. 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the VA Outpatient offices, 2201 SE Loop 820 in Fort Worth.

“This is just one of the ways we want to give back and express our appreciation,” chairman Cindy Graham said. “We get a lot of people to come to this every year.”

Graham estimated about 500 people, which included patients, staff and family, were served at each of last year’s events.

“We’re in pretty big need of turkeys,” Graham said. “Turkeys would need to be 10 pounds or bigger if donated.”

Anyone wishing to help out or find out more information can contact Graham at 817-304-5960.

“We go through about 14 turkeys and around 10 hams for each meal,” she said.

While turkey and ham will be on the menu, sides, including mashed potatoes, giblet gravy, corn, green beans, dressing and cranberry sauce, will also be served.

The cost of the meal is completely free, but organizers are asking for the public’s help in providing assistance, be it volunteering or donations.
