Willow Park police will be accepting unused or expired medication Saturday, April 26, in an effort to help area residents safely dispose of unwanted drugs and avoid misuse or abuse.

The police department will be accepting non-liquid medication from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the police station, located at 101 Stagecoach Trail, during the “Take Back” event, which will be held in conjunction with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, which collected 324 tons of prescription drugs during Take Back events across the country in October.

City residency is not required to participate, according to Willow Park Police Chief Brad Johnson, who said the service is free and anonymous and no questions will be asked.

“Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs,” a statement from Willow Park Police reads. “Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused – flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash – both pose potential safety and health hazards.”
