Christmas on the Square still on; Saturday parade is not

Wintry weather forecast causes Christmas parade move to Dec. 14

By BRIAN SMITH

Weatherford Chamber of Commerce officials and the U.S. Postal Service have one thing in common this time of year.

Not rain, not sleet, not snow nor dead of night will keep the mail from being delivered ... or Christmas on the Square from taking place Saturday. The annual event, which has been going on for more than 20 years, will take over all four quadrants of the Weatherford square from noon to 5 p.m.

While Christmas on the Square remained scheduled for this Saturday at the time of publication, check the chamber’s website at www.weatherford-chamber.com.

The annual Christmas parade has been moved from this Saturday to 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14.

With a chance of rain and low temperatures forecast, food vendors will have plenty of hot chocolate and coffee to warm up event goers. All vendors at the event must be selling merchandise or giving something away and not simply be distributing information, according to Gazzola.

“I firmly believe the cooler weather puts people more into the holiday spirit,” Gazzola said. “It will give people a chance to get their gloves, coats and scarves out. We are definitely moving forward, rain or shine.”

Gazzola said forecasters calling for a low chance of rain Saturday keeps things positive. The event, which drew an estimated 15,000 people last year, will have something for everyone, Gazzola said.

Parker County Cruzers will have a car show on the southeast quadrant of the square for the event. An entertainment stage is packed full with singers, dancers and other toe tapping entertainment. The event has grown so large that a second stage is being used for all the entertainment.

“People have asked through the years if we could allow their group to perform and we haven’t had the space,” Gazzola said. “This year, Compass Bank on the square will be hosting many of the school and church choirs which will be great and put everyone in the holiday spirit.”

Businesses will be open for shoppers to get the perfect holiday gift while kids of all ages will be able to take part in carriage and mini train rides and bounce houses. No Christmas event would be complete without a visit from Santa Claus himself.

For further information on the event, contact the chamber at 817-596-3801.
