Relay for Life of Parker County will be having its annual event Saturday from noon to midnight at Kangaroo Stadium in Weatherford.
The event, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, brings together people from all over the area in an attempt to promote more knowledge about the disease. Walkers circle a track in memory of those who have been taken by the disease, along with survivors who have beaten the disease.
So far, 35 teams with more than 330 participants have signed up and raised more than $42,000 for the event, which features food and entertainment. An opening ceremony is planned at noon with separate survivor and caregiver laps scheduled for 7 p.m.
A luminaria ceremony is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. and is a time to remember people lost to cancer, to support people who currently have cancer and to honor people who have fought cancer in the past. The power of this ceremony lies in providing an opportunity for people to work through grief and find hope.
