Election day in state, local primary elections Tuesday

From Staff Reports

The time for talk is almost over. Tuesday is Election Day for the Republican and Democratic primaries.

Polls will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

According to Parker County elections officials, 7,650 Parker County voters – 10 percent of the county’s 75,966 registered voters – have cast early ballots.

Republicans have contested races throughout its ballot in the state races including U.S. Senate, governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, comptroller, general land office commissioner and railroad commissioner, among others while Democrats have contested races in a handful of contests including U.S. senate, governor, commissioner of agriculture and railroad commissioner.

In Parker County, it is mainly about the Republican primary with a handful of contested county races to be decided with no Democratic opponents waiting in the November general election wings.

Leading the local list is the race for county judge, featuring incumbent Mark Riley, looking to hold onto his seat against tea party challenger and local developer Cary McKay, who narrowly lost to Riley four years ago.

Two other county-wide seats are also contested. Appointed interim Treasurer Jenny Barnwell is facing former business owner-turned evidence technician Dedra Vick. The other is the race for county clerk, with incumbent Jeane Brunson facing a challenge from assistant county clerk Paula Durant.

Precinct 4 residents have two contested races to decide. One is for county commissioner of the precinct, with current precinct foreman Steve Dugan facing transportation specialist and former restaurant manager Fred Hammons. Current commissioner Dusty Renfro’s name appears on the ballot, whoever he is not campaigning for re-election and has backed Dugan.

The other contested race in precinct 4 is for justice of the peace, with incumbent Judge Lynn Johnson seeking re-election with a challenge from current Willow Park City Councilman Bernard Suchocki.

The other contested county race is that for justice of the peace in precinct 3, a four-way race involving former Arlington police supervisor Jerry Hataway, Parker County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Anne-Marie Hollis, Parker County District Attorney’s Office Investigator Dusty Vinson and businessman Greg Martin.
