WILLOW PARK — It hasn’t been quite a month yet, but Susie Henning, Trinity Christian Academy’s newest director of development, is already warming to her new title.
Following the retirement of TCA founder and former curriculum director Marsha Barber, Henning officially began her new task June 1.
For the last six and a half years, Henning has served as administrative assistant to Barber, as well as working on the ministry of construction board.
“It’s been really fun,” Henning said of her career with Trinity Christian.
Armed with a bachelor’s degree in psychology after her college graduation, education and administration weren’t on the top of Henning’s list out of school.
“But then we had a baby, so I became a stay-at-home mom for several years,” she said. “Once this (administrative assistant) job came up here, I decided it would be a good fit for me and my family.”
Over the last year and a half, Henning has gotten a taste of what the position holds, shadowing Barber throughout the school year and around the community.
“I went with her to meetings, board meetings, community meetings, networking, and just really met everyone that she was in contact with,” Henning said. “She really guided me through a typical year of curriculum development.
“I’ve got big shoes to fill.”
With 480 students already signed up for the next school year, Henning and staff are gearing up for changes as well as the welcoming of some of the newest facilities.
“Construction is complete and everything is good to go,” she said. “Now we’re just working on getting students signed up for next year, because there are still some spots available.”
Henning is also preparing to implement a few changes, including a new program involving family partners.
“Last year, we did our Corporate Sponsor Program, where business owners could sponsor or donate through six ways of giving,” she said. “In return, donors received things like complimentary event tickets, articles in the school newsletter, etc.
“After their recognition, we had a lot of families that didn’t own businesses come to us and express that they wanted to help out as well.”
With more than 90 percent of corporate businesses renewing their sponsorships, TCA will unveil the Family Partnership Program this year for anyone else involved in donating.
In addition to the new program, Henning also plans to take advantage of social media to connect with the community.
“We want to get out on Facebook or Twitter or Instagram and really get that going,” she said. “That’s something we haven’t really been doing a lot of.”
