WEATHERFORD — After a Weatherford neighborhood was evacuated Sunday night, area SWAT officers found a woman in a home who the Tarrant County Medical Examiner says committed suicide.
Weatherford police responded to a call shortly after 5:30 p.m. reporting a possible suicidal woman in the 700 block of South Elm Street, according to Lt. Chris Crawford.
The Weatherford-Parker County Special Operations Group was called to assist after officers attempting to check on her welfare reportedly heard a gunshot.
After hearing what they believed to be gunfire, police shut down Elm Street between East Simmons Street and East Akard Avenue and evacuated several homes in the area. LifeCare and the Weatherford Fire Department were staged down the street during the incident.
Officers attempted to make contact with the woman by loudspeaker and, around 8 p.m., the SOG officers entered the home, followed shortly after by a Weatherford Crime Scene unit.
They found a deceased female inside, according to Crawford, who said no one else was home at the time.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman as 36-year-old Caryn Mays and ruled her death a suicide due to a shotgun wound to the head.
