Arson arrest made

Suspect reportedly told ex-girlfriend he burned her former residence

By CHRISTIN COYNE

A Weatherford-area man accused of burning down his ex-girlfriend’s former residence earlier this month has been arrested.

The Parker County Fire Marshal’s office arrested Jacob Lee Sharp, 33, on a state jail felony charge of arson after he reportedly told his former girlfriend that he was responsible.

Firefighters responding to the fire involving a single-wide mobile home in the 3400 block of Old Mineral Wells Highway Oct. 1 reportedly found the fire through the roof when they arrived.

Firefighters said at the time that the house was believed to have been vacant for several weeks.

The fire was suspected to be incendiary in nature and started in the living room area, according to Parker County Fire Marshal Shawn Scott.

The former occupant of the home reported to Scott a week later that Sharp contacted her and stated in a telephone call to her that he caused the fire by blowing up the house.

The woman showed Scott texts she received and played voicemail messages, including one where Sharp can be heard saying, “I blew it up” and “I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

Scott said he has not been able to interview the suspect. He said drug manufacturing was mentioned in one of Sharp’s text messages to the woman who had been living there.

Another woman, incarcerated in the Palo Pinto County Jail the following week, reportedly told investigators she was with Sharp at the time the fire started.

She said she was driving Sharp around to run errands when Sharp wanted to go to the house to retrieve tools, Scott wrote.

Sharp climbed over the locked gate and came running back to the vehicle minutes later, telling the woman to “go, go, go,” the woman said, according to a probable cause affidavit filed with Justice of the Peace Kelly Green.

When the woman asked what happened, Sharp reportedly said he burned the house down, and the woman said she saw smoke coming from the residence and later heard sirens.

Scott said firefighters did a good job that day quickly extinguishing the fire and preserving the scene for fire investigators.
