Road tripping with Sisters on the Fly

A club with simple rules – no men, no kids and no pets – enjoys trips and fellowship in their decorative travel trailers.

The bond between women can sometimes resemble more of a sisterhood than a friendship.

For one club, Sisters on the Fly, that sisterhood was formed by biological sisters and transformed into something so much more.

Created by sisters Becky and Maurrie in 1999 after an all-girls camping and fishing trip, the outdoor adventures club now boasts more than 4,000 members in the United States, Canada, England and Australia.

Participating in outdoor events all over, the “sisters” stand out in the crowd, many of them pulling vintage, hand-painted travel trailers along their journeys.

“Most of them were built in the ‘50s and ‘60s,” said Cecilia Scott, a Parker County resident and member of the club. “It originally started out as a fishing group and became hugely popular.”

The club’s rules are simple — no men, no pets, no kids and be nice. The club also supports “Casting for Recovery,” raising funds to provide breast cancer patients a fly-fishing and other recreations retreat to help them mentally in the recovery process.

“I’m Sister No. 129 so I’ve been involved for a long time,” Beverly Ridenour said. “This is something that’s fun and also encourages women to challenge themselves.”

Activities include fly fishing, kayaking, wine tasting, horseback riding and “whatever else sounds like it might be fun,” according to the Sisters on the Fly website, www.sistersonthefly.com.

While members come from all over, a group of women came through Weatherford Wednesday night, parking at the Weatherford Walmart overnight before heading on to a celebration at the National Cowgirl Museum in Fort Worth.

Anyone interested in joining the club can visit the website. Membership is $60 per person and no experience in horseback riding or fishing or travel-trailer ownership is required.
