Aledo asks for district change

UIL says request impossible to grant to AISD, previously accused of bullying on the football field

By JUDY SHERIDAN

ALEDO – Aledo ISD Superintendent Dr. Derek Citty told the board Nov. 18 that he has submitted a formal request to UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt asking him to consider putting Aledo ISD into a different competitive district for the next couple years.

UIL Deputy Director Jamey Harrison, however, emailed the Extra that the request is “impossible to grant” for several reasons.

“We’re very much interested — it’s a thing of public interest lately — in hopefully being allowed in a different conference,” Citty told trustees last week. “I think it would be the best thing for our competitive school right now and Aledo ISD as well.”

In Aledo’s football district this season the Bearcats won by an average score of 76-8. After a 90-0 game against Fort Worth’s Western Hills, the parent of a Western Hills player lodged a bullying complaint against Aledo’s coaching staff.

Breithaupt made no commitment, Citty said, but now knows the district’s wishes.

UIL rules place schools into conferences by enrollment and then into districts by geography, Harrison explained.

“Schools are not placed into districts based on the competitive balance beyond the conference enrollment cutoffs,” he said.

“Several reasons impact that. Alignments are made for two-year periods. Which year of projected competitiveness would we use? What sport? And, why sports? What about non-athletic competitions?

“As you can see, those elements make such a request impossible to grant.”

Harrison said the alignment for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 school years will be released Feb. 3.

Citty told the board that he and Athletic Director Tim Buchanan submitted an enrollment number of 1,548 high school students to the UIL for the biennial alignment.

The conference announcements will be made in December, he said, but the district anticipates staying in the same classification grouping.

The UIL is raising the number of each classification system, creating a new 6A class.

“We will shift up to 5A, but we’ll essentially be the same 4A conference moved up one,” Citty said. “5A will become 6A. The whole thing is driven by six-man football becoming 1A.”
