Parker County Retired Teachers serves the community throughout the year

The officers and committee chairpersons of the Parker County Retired Teachers met Aug. 6 to plan the upcoming year.

President Louretta Evans presented each officer with a clever job-related gift then opened the meeting to discuss goals to accomplish in 2013-14. Something new this year will be a Valentine’s Banquet for members and their spouses and friends. Also, the annual April auction will offer a silent auction in addition to the traditional live one.

During the school year members will meet monthly in Cuppett Hall at Central Christian Church, 1601 S. Main St., in Weatherford, at 11:30 a.m. for lunch with the business meeting and program to follow at noon. The lunch menu for the Sept. 3 meeting includes barbecued chicken, potato salad, baked beans,  strawberry cake and drink. The special guest speaker is David Orcutt, CEO of Weatherford Regional Medical  Center. A reservation must be made for lunch, which costs $8.

Parker County Retired Teachers provides a myriad of volunteer services to the community through activities such as delivering Meals on Wheels, mentoring in schools, visiting nursing homes and serving in churches and other organizations. Members reported more than 18,000 hours of service this past year.

Realizing the value of education, the group supported the state book project by collecting and sharing  more than 500 books with the Community Education Children’s Book Program at the end of school in May. Another focus is popping popcorn every Friday at First National Bank which, in return, provides funds for scholarships for future teachers attending Weatherford College.

This vibrant organization, which averages 90 in attendance each month, is dedicated to making a difference through serving others. Retired teachers and other retired school personnel in Parker County are invited to join.

For more information or to make a reservation for lunch, call Kathryn Jordan at 817-594-5748. Organized in 1974, Parker County Retired Teachers promises to make this 40th year an outstanding one.
