A Parker County woman has been selected to take part in a statewide pageant for seniors this summer.
Ms. Senior Parker County 2012 Selma Johnson, who lives between Peaster and Poolville, will be competing in the Ms. Texas Senior Classic Pageant Aug. 22-24 at the Plano Southfork Hotel.
Johnson says she is the first resident from the county to ever take part in the 14th annual event.
After her pageant win last year, officials from the state pageant asked her to take part in this summer’s event.
At first, she admits, she declined the offer.
“I was afraid after winning the Parker County pageant in 2012, people may think I was being a bit overzealous by taking part in the state pageant,” Johnson recalled. “I then decided that I’m me and I’m having fun. I don’t want to be sitting in some rocking chair. I’m going to do this.”
Taking part in the pageant will get Parker County’s name out there. She says she runs into a lot of people who have heard of it.
“We definitely have quite the heritage here, that’s for sure, as I can’t seem to go anywhere without someone hearing of it,” Johnson said. “I guess by doing this I just want to change the image of aging.”
Johnson said she had to qualify before pageant organizers and was accepted. The pageant categories Johnson will be competing in include evening gown, talent and interview. Any money she brings back will be going directly into a number of charities she supports, including Freedom House, where she serves as the sexual assault intervention prevention programs coordinator, and Zonta.
In her talent competition, Johnson says she will be doing a poem with some updated twists because of her love of acting. She says she starts out as a bag lady, but as the poem progresses, she ends up wearing glitz. The routine also features some dance steps.
“By doing that, I just wanted to show that seniors can do just about everything,” Johnson said. “That’s really my reason for doing pageants.”
While Johnson’s entry fee has been paid, she is looking for sponsors, both private and corporate, to help out with expenses for the weekend. For information on how to help, contact Johnson at email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org.
