Doss invites public to join in celebration of Mary Martin’s life

Celebrate one of Weatherford’s brightest hometown girls, Mary Martin, on April 10 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center in Weatherford.

The mother of the late, famous actor Larry Hagman, Martin was a Broadway star. She was the winner of a Tony Award, Kennedy Award and a Peabody Award and has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She is best known for her portrayals of Peter Pan, as Nellie Forbush in “South Pacific” and Maria von Trapp in “The Sound of Music.”

Tickets are $25 per person and include dinner from Quimbys Quisines of Weatherford. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and visitors can view the Memories of Mary Martin exhibit inside the museum before and after dinner. Dress for the evening is business casual.

The evening’s highlight is Mary Martin historian, George Dansker, sharing his lifetime of research about Martin’s life and career. The sponsors for the Mary Martin Dinner and Lecture include First Financial Bank and Jerry’s GM.

“Dansker will be showing video clips and playing some of Mary’s songs as part of his presentation,” said Amanda Rush, curator. “He will talk about her career, her personal life and show photos from his private collection.”

Artifacts and items that belonged to Mary Martin collected by Dansker will also be on display during the event. Dansker has even agreed to gift some of them to the renovated Mary Martin/Larry Hagman Gallery at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center. After his talk, Dansker will be available to talk to visitors who have questions. All ticket sales and donations that evening go towards the renovation of the Mary Martin/ Larry Hagman gallery.

“The gallery renovation will help us to display additional Mary Martin/Larry Hagman artifacts in the collection, update the display cases to reflect the rich nature of Mary Martin’s Career. We want our visitors to step into a room that feels like the theaters Mary Martin performed in for so many years of her life. Additional photos will show Mary Martin both on stage and back in her hometown of Weatherford. Your donation will help us to make this Gallery a reality,” said Heather Castagna, executive director of the Doss Heritage and Culture Center.  “Mary was so proud of her hometown.  Now we would like to create something in Weatherford that she could be proud of that celebrates her legacy.”

The Doss Heritage and Culture Center is located at 1400 Texas Drive in Weatherford and the phone number is 817-599-6168. For more information on current exhibits and activities, visit the museum’s Facebook page or website, www.dosscenter.org.

The mission of the James and Dorothy Doss Heritage and Culture Center is to collect, preserve and exhibit the heritage of Parker County and Texas.
