Severely neglected dog euthanized; two arrested

A mother and son were arrested Wednesday after a Parker County animal control officer found a pit bull dog that had been severely neglected.

Animal control Officer Matt Anderson was driving through Western Lake Estates Tuesday afternoon when he noticed a dog that he initially believed to be deceased lying near the front steps of a mobile home in the 100 block of Tumbleweed Drive.

When he approached and heard the animal making sounds of distress, Anderson realized the dog, which had open wounds and was suffering from mange, was still alive, according to the Parker County sheriff's office.

"I don't see how anyone could pass her and hear her painful cries and not do a thing to help her," said Anderson, who later named the dog Belle.

Anderson took the animal to the Weatherford-Parker County Animal Shelter, where a veterinarian reportedly determined that the pit pull was severely dehydrated, malnourished and had mange that had been left untreated for months, as well as infected wounds.

A video of Anderson gently attempting to remove the animal from his vehicle with a towel shows the dog crying out in pain as she is touched but continuing to wag her tail.

Two other dogs on the property were believed to have attacked the dog, leaving her with open wounds and an obvious infection.

"Anyone entering the home had to see this dog and the terrible condition she was in," Sheriff Larry Fowler said.

The animal had very little fur, was covered in scabs and injuries and had a protracted rectum, as well.

Belle was euthanized due to the severity of her condition.

"Belle's condition was simply traumatic to see," Sheriff's Animal Control Supervisor Karen Kessler said. "Had any of the suspects sought medical attention in the early stages of infection, Belle would have survived and she would be here with us today. Her condition is tragic and was inflicted at the hands of adults who obviously did not care. Belle's wounds were open and painful, especially when touched or exposed to the sun. Her cries were unbearable to hear. Her suffering was just senseless and did not have to occur."
