Hudson Oaks residents to see increase in solid waste billing

HUDSON OAKS — Residents will see an increase in their solid waste bill in the May billing cycle after approval from city council members Thursday night.

The increase will run about $1.10 a month for residents who take part in trash, recycling and rent a trash cart from the city’s waste company Republic Services. City Administrator Patrick Lawler said the city had not passed on Republic’s increases for the last three years and was helping residents pay their trash bill in effect to the tune of about two percent a year.

Lawler said other Parker County cities using Republic have already passed on the increases. The base rate and franchise fee for garbage only will go up from $10.36 to $11.05 a month, cart rental from $2.24 to $2.39 and curbside recycling from $3.92 to $4.18, according to a staff report.

“We waited as long as we could with it,” council member Marc Povero said.

Commercial customers are billed directly by the company and will be unaffected by this action, as their rates are already increasing annually.

In other news during the 30-minute meeting:

• Approval for a specific use permit to allow a church in the shopping center at 3310 Fort Worth Highway was given.

The church, Divine Mercy Lutheran Church, would be located in the shopping center with Big Burger and Ultimate Cupcakes, Lawler said. The 1,500 square foot facility would include an office and seat about 60 people. Planning and Zoning approved the measure recently.

• Former council member Dan David will be honored for his service to the city with a reception at 6:30 p.m. May 22 before the next regular council meeting.

• Proclamations honoring National Public Works Week, National Police Week and National Public Service Recognition Week were read and accepted by city employees. In honor or Police Week May 11-17, the police department will have its annual Open House May 15 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Food and tours of the department will be given.
