County officials deem Saturday’s public county courthouse tours a ‘huge success’

Parker County residents along with Texans from as far away as Shamrock packed the Parker County Courthouse on Saturday to tour the county’s historic courthouse.

A group of 200 people filled the courtroom to hear Parker County Judge Mark Riley tell the story of the 127 year old building at the 1 p.m. tour.

Approximately 100 people attended the 10 a.m. and another 100 at the 3 p.m. tour. Many more walked the halls looking at the historic photos and documents on display.

“I would say the day was a huge success,” Riley said. “We estimate we had about 500 people visit the courthouse in total. I want to thank all the people who took such an interest in these tours. I also want to thank Evon Markum of First National Bank, Kim Thieme with the City of Weatherford, Don Huddleston, Harold Lawrence with the Parker County Historical Commission, the Weatherford Public Library, Donna Tillman and Lori Bennett with the Citizens Courthouse Committee, Terri Ramos Smith, Amy Kramer and all the county employees who helped make this such a great event. So many people contributed in so many ways, and that is what made it happen.”

Riley said he plans to hold another open house and tour event at the same time next year.

“It was fantastic to see the square filled with people,” he said. “I think holding our event in conjunction with Weatherford Blooms made for an incredible Saturday in downtown Weatherford. We look forward to doing it again next year.”

In the meantime, Riley will focus his efforts on helping the courthouse committee raise funds for Christmas decorations and lighting that will be new to the courthouse this year.

“We have plans to adorn the courthouse lawn with a large Christmas tree and even bring back the star on top of the clock tower,” he said. “It may be May, but Christmas will be here soon and this year, the courthouse will look better than ever.”
