Educators can play a key role in any child’s life.
Four educators from Weatherford Independent School District found that out Friday, as one of their own, WHS graduate Moises Barco, expressed his gratitude toward the quartet at the Weatherford Ninth Grade Center.
“Each one of y’all has made a big difference in my life,” Barco, who graduated in 2009, said. “I’m the way I am now because of you and I want to say today is about you, it’s not about me.”
Barco singled out Dwayne Smith, who was not in attendance due to a family event, Gary Jeter, Ben Schoonover and Jeff Johnson for their roles in his life.
“Y’all know my background and how hard it was for me growing up,” Barco said. “Mr. Jeter is one of the smartest men I’ve ever known. Every time I watch ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ and they can call anyone, I would call you. Mr. Schoonover, you knew my brothers and you knew my situation. But you always made me feel like you were on my side. And to Mr. Johnson, you started out as a substitute at Weatherford, but I’ve never seen so much passion, and you really took the time to get to know me.
“I just want you to know that you have made a difference in my life.”
Barco surprised the group with plaques and certificates honoring them for their impact, as well as a complimentary lunch.
