CLARIFICATION: ESD No. 1 annexation reportedly passes

From Staff Reports

Contrary to last night's report on the ESD No. 1 annexation of the Aledo fire district, the measure reportedly passed, but with a caveat.

In separate tallies, voters in both the ESD No. 1 and the Aledo fire district approved the annexation question, proposition 1.

A second proposition related to the acceptance of the district's debt passed in the ESD No. 1 district, but failed by 40 votes among Aledo fire district voters.

The Democrat was under the belief that both propositions had to pass by voters in both districts in order for the measure to succeed.

However, Parker County Judge Mark Riley told the Democrat an attorney representing ESD No. 1 has told that board that the annexation proposal passed, but that revenue generated within the annexed district cannnot be used to help retire existing ESD No. 1 debt.

ESD No. 1 voters passed both propositions – the first authorizing annexation of the Aledo district and the second involving the acceptance of the district's debt. In ESD No. 1, voters supported annexation 712-362, a favorable 2-1 margin, and passed proposition two with 655 votes in favor and 407 against.

Voters within the Aledo fire district narrowly supported proposition one, the annexation question, by a vote of 631-589, but rejected proposition two, with 625 opposed to 585 in favor of accepting the district's debt.

The Democrat apologizes for any confusion its initial reports caused and will follow up on this story Monday.
