A couple who, police say, left their 12-year-old son in the car while getting drunk at a Reno bar Friday night were charged with endangering their child.

Brandon Matthew Murphy, 35, and Tracy Jane Murphy, 33, both of Azle, were each arrested on charges of abandoning or endangering a child and public intoxication, according to jail records.

A Reno police officer, who was doing a security check in the area of a bar in the 11200 block of FM Road 730 around 11:30 p.m., reportedly saw a boy sitting in the driver’s seat of a PT Cruiser parked behind the bar.

The child told the officer he was 12 years old, his parents were inside the bar and he had been left outside for about 30 minutes, according to Reno police.

The boy’s parents smelled of alcohol, staggered when they walked and their speech was slurred, the arresting officer wrote in the complaint.

Brandon Murphy reportedly said a family member was going to give the family a ride home. However, Tracy Murphy admitted that the couple intended to drive home, according to Reno police.

Both were arrested that night, and the boy was released to a family member.

Both parents were released on bond Saturday afternoon.
