Man run over, killed after wreck

A series of collisions on U.S. Highway 199 in Reno early Monday morning led to the death of a 56-year-old Parker County man.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the driver of a 2007 Ford Ranger pickup, Larry Mitchell Perkins, was involved in a crash in the westbound highway lanes involving a silver Dodge Neon car driven by 25-year-old Justin Peterson, of Springtown, around 6:30 a.m.

The disabled pickup came to rest in the roadway about 73 feet west of the Midway Road intersection, according to Senior Trooper Gary Rozzell, DPS spokesman.

Perkins had gotten out of his vehicle and was standing next to his truck when a 1999 Lincoln Town Car driven westbound by Miguel Angel Ramirez struck the Ford Ranger, causing the pickup to spin around and strike Perkins, who was thrown into the right, outside lane of travel, according to Rozzell.

A Volkswagen Jetta driven by Freddy Rivera-Flores, of Springtown, then ran over the man, Rozzell said.

Perkins was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.

Details on the initial crash were not available Monday afternoon.

Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s records indicate Perkins lived nearby.

Man OK after driving into pond

Officials say a man successfully escaped after the truck he was driving left Church Road late Friday night and landed in a nearby pond.

Parker County Assistant Fire Marshal Frank Watson said he received a call around 11:30 p.m. Friday reporting a completely submerged vehicle.

The driver was able to swim out but was reported to be unable to say whether he had any passengers in the vehicle, according to Watson.

Responding firefighters from Silver Creek VFD reportedly found the top of the immersed truck cab under about two feet of water, estimated at around 40 degrees.

Watson and Silver Creek VFD Lt. Matt Wander, both swift water rescue technicians and divers, checked the vehicle for occupants - none were located -  and hooked up a tow chain for the vehicle’s removal, Watson said.
