Fires follow the fireworks

Fire danger increases across area as firefighters battle numerous fires past several days

By CHRISTIN COYNE

After a busy Fourth of July night that lasted into the early morning hours Friday for many area firefighters battling a number of fires, many of those same firefighters spent Friday afternoon stopping runaway grass fires in the south and west areas of the county.

Firefighters from multiple departments, including Cool-Garner, Greenwood and Mineral Wells, responded to extinguish a blaze on the east side of Lake Mineral Wells State Park and Trailway near High Point Road.

The fire appeared to have burned within a few yards around one home on High Point Road, as well as on both sides of High Point Road and on the west side of Maddux Road.

A peace officer with the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife was attempting late Friday afternoon to extinguish flare-ups with a large bucket as firefighters fought the fire elsewhere in the area.

The Democrat was unable to reach the Cool-Garner fire department Friday or Saturday for more information.

Other departments were able to stop a fast-moving grass fire in the 1100 block of Fletcher Road south of Weatherford Friday afternoon that destroyed two buildings.

The property owner said she was burning in a burn barrel behind a mobile home on her property when the fire jumped and caught the house on fire.

Though she attempted to put it out with a garden hose, the fire quickly got away, spreading down the pasture to another outbuilding.

The house was vacant but was being used for storage for her family’s items, she said.

The buildings quickly burned to the ground. Chickens near the fire were reported to be OK.

Firefighters from ESD No. 6 and Weatherford departments, along with others, including North Hood County, responded and extinguished the blaze.

The Parker County Fire Marshal’s Office could not be reached for comment or additional information Friday or Saturday.

Various pasture and roadside fires were reported Saturday afternoon as well. While there is no current burn ban in Parker County, the recent heat, high winds and lack of rainfall are making for increasingly dangerous fire conditions, where the flick of a lighted cigarette from a vehicle can spark a fire.
