Weatherford Democrat

— Kathryn Elizabeth Murphey, 66, of Fort Worth, died Dec. 19, 2013.

A memorial service was held at Arlington Heights Health and Rehabilitation Center in Fort Worth where Kathryn’s other family resides and cared for her. Heartfelt gratitude is sent out to all the loving caregivers there as well as Universal Hospice of Fort Worth.

She was born Sept. 21, 1947, in Dayton, Ohio. At age 9, she, along with seven younger siblings and one sibling “on the way,” and her parents, Robert and Frances, moved to 405 W. Lee Ave. in Weatherford.

Kathryn had been a Bluebird in Tipp City, Ohio, then a girl scout in Weatherford. At Weatherford High School, she continued her creative passion for writing by contributing to the school paper, the Grass Burr. Her love of reading was constant throughout her life, as was writing poetry, essays and plays. Political and world history as well as international current events and the world’s religions kept her attention and focused her writing. She was influenced and stimulated by her high school and Weatherford College instructors. One could always find her listening to the radio or at her typewriter.

Kathryn fell ill to schizophrenia in her early years and literally made “lemonade out of lemons.” She demonstrated incredible stamina, courage and strength of character despite her very difficult challenges. Her intellectual curiosity overrode her survival struggles. In her last few years, she became known for her love of animals, especially bunnies, along with her love of books.

Survivors include her siblings, in birth order: Daniel Murphey and wife, Darleen, of Fort Worth; Marilynn Machin and husband, James, of Austin; Marjorie Murphey-Camacho and husband, Vaughn, of Austin; Robert Murphey, of Fort Worth; Barbara Murphey, of Los Angeles; Rebecca Johnston and husband, Monty, of Weatherford; Patricia Rauch Barnes and husband, Robin, of Bend, Ore.; Jennifer Finstad and husband, Barry, of Cranfills Gap; nine nieces and nephews; and four great-nieces and great-nephews.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her older brother, Timothy Allen; father, Robert Earl Murphey; and mother, Frances Carver Murphey.
