— Wynona “Winnie” Garrison Cooper

LAKE RIDGE, Va. – Mrs. Wynona “Winnie” Garrison Cooper, 91, of Lake Ridge, Va., died Dec. 18, 2013, in Lake Ridge.

There will be a celebration of Winnie’s life at 11 a.m. on Jan. 11 at Potomac Crest Baptist Church, 15418 Cardinal Drive, Woodbridge, Va.,  22193. Interment will be private at Quantico National Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home in Dale City, Va.

Winnie was born Feb. 14, 1922, the fifth of six children, to Floyd Orville and Laura Hurst Garrison, of the Fox Community, near Weatherford. She graduated from Weatherford High School in May 1939. After several years of correspondence and visits during World War II, Winnie married Claud Stephens Cooper, master sergeant, United States Marine Corps, on Aug. 5, 1944, at the First Baptist Church in Sherman after Claud returned from the South Pacific. At the time, Winnie was living in Sherman, working for the Quaker Oats Company as a keypunch operator. During Claud’s USMC career, they lived in California, North Carolina, Hawaii, Texas and Virginia. After Claud’s retirement in 1959 from the USMC at his last duty station in Quantico, Va., they remained in Dumfries, Va., for two years and then moved to Woodbridge, Va., in 1961.

Winnie was employed at the Marine Corps Exchange in Quantico, Va., for 47 years in a number of different positions in the personnel, payroll, purchasing and accounting departments. She retired in 2004.

Winnie is known for her many friends, her quick smile, her loving nature, her enjoyment of meeting new people and her willingness to listen to anyone who wanted or needed to talk. She joined First Baptist Church of Woodbridge in 1961 and was a greeter there for 25 years, while also serving in a large number of other volunteer positions there. She became a charter member of Potomac Crest Baptist Church of Woodbridge, Va., in June 1986, and has been active there as a treasurer (11 years), a greeter (since inception) and in an extensive number of other volunteer positions. Potomac Crest Baptist Church, and Winnie’s many dear friends and acquaintances there, are all very close to her heart.

Winnie is survived by her daughter, Judith Kay Galloway and husband, Michael, of Springfield, Va.; her son, Wesley Neal Cooper and wife, Katherine, of Tampa, Fla.; her daughter-in-law, Bonnie Sue (Dodson) Cooper, of Dumfries, Va.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Ila Mae Cooper, of Weatherford.

Winnie was predeceased by her parents, Floyd Orville Garrison and Laura Jane (Hurst) Garrison, of Weatherford; her husband, Claud, of Woodbridge, Va.; her son, Ronald Curtis Cooper, of Woodbridge, Va.; her three brothers (Orville Glen Garrison, Franklin P. Garrison, Hoyt Garrison); and her two sisters (Mildred Garrison Boyd and Verna Lea Garrison Simmons).

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Winnie’s memory may be made to either the Building Fund or the Music Fund at Potomac Crest Baptist Church, 15418 Cardinal Drive, Woodbridge, VA  22193.
