Iva “Joan” Venable

Iva “Joan” Venable, 77, of Weatherford, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, at Peachtree Place.

Service is 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home Chapel in McAlester, Okla. The family will receive friends at at 1 p.m., just before the service, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Bache-Red Oak Cemetery, in Bache, Okla. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home.

Iva “Joan” Venable was born Jan. 24, 1936, in Idabel, Okla., to Daniel and Lottie (Karnes) Houston. She grew up there and graduated from Idabel Gray High School in 1954. She married the love of her life, Jim Venable, on April 24, 1954, and shared 59 precious years together. Her family was her life and she especially loved spending time with her four grandchildren, who affectionately called her “MeMa.” Joan spent most of her professional career working in different aspects of real estate. She worked as a title insurance underwriter, a commercial loan closer and was vice president and manager of Tulsa Abstract Company before retiring.

She is survived by her husband, Jim Venable, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Debby Venable, of Checotah, Okla., daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Don Branch, of Weatherford; granddaughter, Andrea Davis and husband, Josh, of Checotah; three grandsons, Brad Venable and wife, Kathryn, of Plano, Michael Branch and wife, Jessica, of Keller, and Stephen Branch and wife, Amy, of Moore, Okla.; six great-grandchildren, Madison and Alexis Davis, of Checotah, Cooper and Avery Branch, of Keller, and Roman and Clark Branch, of Moore; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Phil and Kathy Houston, of Idabel, and Walter “Gordon” Houston, of Claremore, Okla., and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Marion Phillips.

The family requests donations be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, OMRF.org.
