Robert Louis Tremaine Jr.

— Robert Louis Tremaine Jr., 78, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, after a long battle with dementia.

Bob was born in Trinidad, Colo., in June of 1934. He went to high school at Highland High in Albuquerque, N.M., and attended college at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, where he graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He played center for the HSU Basketball team where he set numerous school records. He was selected to the All Border Conference and All Southwest Rocky Mountain Area teams in 1954, ‘55, ‘57. During his time at HSU, he met and married his wife of 55 years, Glenda Wages Tremaine. Together, they would build a thriving ministry. Later, Bob earned Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees. After graduation from HSU, he began his pastoral work at First Baptist Church in Red Springs, Texas. In 1962, he became pastor of North Side Baptist Church in Hobbs, N.M. In 1967, he was appointed a Southern Baptist Home Missionary and was sent to Worcester, Mass. where he led the first Southern Baptist congregation in New England until 1974. From there he moved to Florida, where he pastored First Baptist Church, Miami Beach. His last leadership role behind the pulpit was at First Baptist Church in Beverly Hills, Calif., from 1979 until his retirement in 1988. Actively involved in home mission work, he started 38 new congregations and 51 churches. In Worcester, he led Puerto Rican and African-American Bible studies in the inner city and established the Worcester Crisis Center, a 24-hour hotline for people with drug abuse or other problems. In Miami, he established a Cuban congregation. In Beverly Hills, he started churches for Spanish, Korean, Thai, Laotian, Cambodian, Arabic and African-American communities. He also began a ministry to poker players in Las Vegas holding worship services in various Casinos like the Golden Nugget and Caesar’s Palace. After he retired from the pulpit, he became a Director of Missions with the Baptist General Convention of Texas for the Parker/Palo Pinto Association in Weatherford, Texas where he served from 1992-2005. In 2004, he moved to Arlington, Texas, where he lived the remainder of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Sr. and Lois, his sister Joann and his eldest daughter, Tori.

He is survived by his wife Glenda; his son, Tim of Arlington, Texas; his daughter, Tara of Los Angeles, Calif.; his grandchildren, Taylor of Dallas, Texas, and Chase, of Arlington, Texas.

A memorial service will be held in Hobbs, N.M., at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10 at the Crosswinds Community Church located at 1701 N. Jefferson St.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any memorial gifts be made in Bob’s name to the: Tori Tremaine Scholarship c/o New Mexico Baptist Foundation, P.O. Box 16560, Albuquerque, NM  87191-6560. This scholarship fund provides financial aid to missionary kids attending Hardin Simmons University.
